During my quiet time today, I asked the Lord to speak to me and he took me Psalm 82.
The psalm is about earthly judges.
I learnt that God likens earthly judges to gods. Why? Because they are given the privilege to preside over the affairs of men and to pass judgement (just like God ). God is our only judge, he is the judge of the whole wide world Isaiah 33:22 and Psalm 75:7.
Verse 2 shows that the earthly judges were impartial and unfair in their judgement and handed out judgement in favor of the wicked. This is very much like our present time where all that is termed justice is skewed, perverse and in favor of the wicked, the rich, the ungodly, the popular and well placed people in the society. Justice has been so perverted that now it seems like a joke to actually go to the courts to obtain justice.
Verse 3-4 shows how God admonishes the judges to give fair justice. Justice to the poor, those who have been unfairly treated, the needy who cry out for justice, and orphans who have no one to help them. God expects judges (people in the place of authority or able to make a difference) to uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute and to deliver (pass judgement) from their oppressors or evil people. It shows that we are all important to God, more so these sets of people because of their vulnerability.
Verse 5 explains that instead of these sets of people being given the judgement that they desire, they are instead treated unfairly. The judges give them no justice and allow them to be mistreated or treated unfairly. The verse explains the magnitude of sins power over the earth. It talks about how their oppressors are in the dark and do not seek God to show them how to mete out justice. But instead in their self-important ways they wander in darkness in a sense of their know-it-all which is not in line with the ways of God or the kind of justice God has in mind for his people.
Verse 6-7 explains how God reminds them that they nothing but mortal beings at the end of the day. Same as the people that seek for justice from them that they oppress. The verses also explain that they too will die just like their oppresses (the people whom they oppress) and face the eternal judge, God.
Verse 8 reminds us that almighty God is still the judge of the whole world who will deliver justice to the whole wide world Isaiah 33:22 and Psalm 75:7 .
I learnt that God cares about us and how we are treated (justice) in spite of what we may think because of how badly the world has fallen. In fact, verse 5 actually refers to this fallen state of the world. We as human beings especially believers in Christ carry God’s nature on the inside of us, within ourselves (his death and life) 2 Corinthians 4:10 and as such we need to treat people fairly and justly the way God would. We need to treat people with kindness just as Christ would.
We should also bear in mind that all injustice will be dealt with by God in spite of what the devil and the world would have us believe that there is no justice and only the wealthy, influential, unbelievers, people who do not fear God can get justice of any king and that bad deeds go unpunished. God wants us to know that he is still in control of this world, and the bible tells us that God will judge every bad deed and bring them to light 2 Timothy 4:1, Romans 2:6-11. Sometimes this judgement is meted out here on earth and other times in the afterlife. For there is life after death Hebrews 9:27 tells us that after we die we face judgement.
Therefore we should be encouraged and not give up due to discouragement from the injustice of our present life. We should know that God is still in control and he has a plan as he is the only righteous God. Anyone reading this blog who would like to escape the wrath of God that will surely fall on this world and has not given their lives to Christ, I encourage you to invite Jesus into your heart and ask him to forgive you of your sins and ask him to become your savior and master and he will do that for you immediately Romans 10:13.
God is waiting for you. God bless you and have a wonderful day.
